The AmeriCorps member working in IRL After School will spend their service year working directly with students. The AmeriCorps member will aid in planning and implementing after school programming during three sessions [ 8 week fall session, 2 week winter session, & 8 week spring session] that take place during the school year. IRL offers a wide range of academic enrichment activities. The member will check in with students in different settings including class, lunch, and after-school. Student engagement in enrichment activities is bolstered by the authentic and intentional relationships the member develops over the course of the year. We are seeking to add an additional teammate to the IRL team to work with us in after-school.

IRL's Project Power member’s service will serve the Social Emotional and Academic needs of a large heterogeneous group of 250 students by facilitating and supporting high-quality after-school programming. In service to our teens the member will learn fundamentals of youth development, community-wide coordination, and fostering a fun, loving, and safe culture that promotes growth and collaboration.
As a trained member of the IRL staff, the member will be empowered and qualified to engage volunteers and model effective youth development practices. Engaging our predominantly college-aged volunteers before programming, sets the tone and expectations for IRL.

In Real Life (IRL) is a network of fun, engaging, high quality, hands-on after-school programs for all Asheville City Schools middle school students. IRL was formed from the Listening to Our Teens Network following research that was gathered from interviewing middle school students, families and community members about their experiences with after-school. IRL is a coordinated network of invested and talented individuals and organizations offering high-quality programs for young teens. Students design a unique schedule from a catalog that includes arts, academic support, community service, and recreation. A unique feature and strength of IRL is that teens can choose to attend 1-4 days per week. This flexibility allows students who are already engaged in extracurricular activities to participate, and keeps the population IRL students diverse. IRL increases the opportunities for vulnerable youth to have positive peer relationships. Racial and socio-economic justice is central to the mission of IRL. Our population is a proportional representation of Asheville Middle School (AMS)). We serve a higher percentage of youth in poverty than the whole school population. Our program increases access to mentors who also reflect the population we serve.
